Three Important Questions to Ask When Hiring a Family Lawyer
When you are faced with divorce, separation, child custody or child support decision, finding an attorney can be one of the most important decisions you’ll ever have to make. When you choose a family law attorney that you like and trust, you will go into the proceedings with more confidence. This is very important when it concerns your children.
First, you will want to see how much you are going to be charged for each of the services, such as the lawyer services, paralegal services and so on. You will also want to see when you will be billed for these services and how much a retainer fee is for your case. You will not want to make a decision on only the fees, though. Below you will find a few questions that are key to hiring a lawyer that will best represent you.
The first question you will want to ask the lawyer that you are considering is if they have been sanctioned for any ethics violation. When a lawyer acts unprofessional misconduct, the state’s bar association will punish them for these acts. These high ethical standards are based on how they practice the law and their customer service to their clients. The lawyer must be in good standing to practice law in the state. Some things are minor infractions such as not paying the bar member dues on time. This may lead to suspension, but has an easy remedy. A lawyer can lead to disbarment if their conduct is a felony conviction. You will want to ensure your lawyer has good character and is competent before you hire them.
The second question you will want to ask is if the lawyer you are thinking of hiring focuses on family law. This is important because the laws are in constant change. The times change and with this laws change to make it better for all parties involved. It is also true that rules of civil procedure evidence and court rulings differ from one judge to the other. You will want to hire an attorney that practices family law so that the lawyer is aware of all the changes in the law and other things surrounding the case. When a lawyer is experienced with family law and has tried many cases to do with divorces, custody, child support and other family issues they are more successful. You will want to look for a focused lawyer as this will lead you to his focused practice.
The third question is will this attorney be handling your case from the beginning to the end of the case? In some law firms the attorney you meet first for your initial consultation is not the attorney that will represent you throughout the case. If the firm is going to give your case to the attorney that has the lightest workload that week is not being very selective. You will want to ensure that the attorney you are speaking with is the attorney that will represent you from start to finish.
